John Hancock (February 24, 1737 – June 9, 1793) was an American patriot and statesman, best known for his large signature on the United States Declaration of Independence. His signature was made in a style known as copperplate script, which was perfected by John Baskerville. The first recorded use of "John Hancock" as a signature was on June 9, 1768, when he signed a petition to the General Assembly of Massachusetts.
